Homeschool Spanish 1 meets at the Severna Park Evangelical Presbyterian Church in Pasadena, Maryland. There are two sections of this in-person class. The first meets from 8:20 am - 9:50 AM, the second meets from 9:55 am - 11:25 AM. Each class is 90 minutes long.
About the course: Get ready to have fun learning Spanish! We will act, use music and movement, games, stories, and personalized topics of interest to build community and acquire Spanish! We will work with high-frequency structures (most commonly used words and phrases) to be able to communicate right away!
This course is focused on listening, reading, writing, and speaking – using the language in functional ways. Grammar and drills are not a primary focus of our in-class sessions though I can provide resources and explanations to students who are interested in learning more about the mechanics of the language beyond being able to use the language.
Students will develop a discerning ear through lots of comprehensible input in Spanish by a dual-native (both English and Spanish) speaker and trained instructor.
This class is not full immersion, but it is a type of immersion. There will be lots of Spanish spoken in class with supports in place to make it comprehensible. Students can expect to hear me speaking in Spanish, and understanding what I'm saying during most of our time together. After all, teaching a foreign language in English is like teaching a child to swim without water.
The goal is for students to be speaking, reading, and writing in Spanish at the Novice-Mid level by the end of the school year. (Based on ACTFLs Standard of Proficiency after about 135-150 hours of instruction)
Successful completion of this course is worth a full High School World Language credit. Beyond our once-a-week meeting, students will have assignments to complete at home throughout the week totaling about 3 hours.
Note: Some class sessions may be provided virtually over Zoom if in-person classes cannot take place.
Text and Resources are provided digitally by the tutor.
Pre-requisites:
Every student needs access to a full functionality computer with a camera, microphone, and speakers (built-in is fine) and access to high-speed internet.
Students will be using Canvas LMS and Google Drive and should be familiar with using computers and navigating websites.
Students will have the best results if they can read, write, speak, and listen well in English.
